This is a recent painting of mine that I’ve decided to do as a larger piece. I’ve begun it already, its going to be 3 x 4 feet. This version above is painted all in oil. What is it about? It’s me working through the realm of cross-over, where the infinite and the worldly combine. Love, human-ness, the universe, and the void.
I have been moving between using gouache and oil, with the occaissional mixed use of acrylic, trying to find a way to keep the painting free, fast, and alive. Gouache has an immediacy, and it shows my drawing hand to good effect. I paint fast in oil – i’ve been painting in oil for more than two decades, since i was in high school. But it does not work well for linear work.
So for this large piece I thought quite a bit how to use each medium to its advantage, in a way that will still allow me to paint quickly and freely. Gouache has the trouble of fixing it – I can’t tolerate the idea of it going unvarnished, and a work this size would never be framed under glass. I did some experiments with a tiny gouache sketch I had lying around, using an acrylic medium. It bled, but just a tiny bit. So my tentative plan is to do a layer in gouache, use the acrylic medium, and then continue in oil.
How to do the colored lines best? Not sure yet. Below is the larger piece in progress…
