I did this painting last week… its a bit of an experiment. Its in oil, but i can see myself reaching for ways to incorporate some of the freedom and graphic qualities I find with my gouache work. Is something that, in different ways I have been pushing for the last year or so. I can paint quickly in oils, and fairly expertly, but the technique I have mastered is basically an alla prima technique which coats the entire surface in an even and dense paint layer. Its a great technique for painting from life, but not so good for inviting the mystery into my process.
So this painting was built with a wet layer on panel, and the oil application mostly light (i tend to overpaint faces no matter what i do!). The thinner application of paint, with some areas almost rubbed down to background, allows for the inclusion of graphic line work.
Mainly, I want to be able to paint faster, more intuitively with oil… so this is an interesting first stab at an approach.
It has a bit of a mystical theme… I am heavy into my meditation practice this year, its really broken open.
