Well I have been drawn back to experiment with gouache. Is this productive? Don’t know yet. But since having my son 7 months ago it’s been hard to get my hand back… and at least this is really exciting for me so I say good enough.
Experiement 1: I have been drawn to the word obilvion, to the idea of returning back to an undiferentiated source (more like nirvana than nihilism). I took out a small piece of Ampersand Clayboard (usually i just paint on the back, having purchased that type because they have smaller sizes available than the plain hardboard at many stores). I used a lot of rubbing off – spraying water, dry brushing, and even cloth. Interesting textures, sort of like distressed areas that almost glow…
This is the next piece I did – just on some roughly gessoed board. I continued to use the same technique but in a much more subtle way… the color scheme was really light for what i have been doing lately, and I liked it.
I took this technique to live model day at my studio… i only have tried gouache before with a live model with very poor success… but I think I am on to something interesting (to me). Next I’ll have to revisit the whole issue of fixing gouache.
